Online physiotherapy — also called telehealth or remote physiotherapy — has grown enormously across the UK since 2020. What began as a necessity during lockdown has evolved into a genuinely valued service option for millions of patients. But is it as effective as traditional face-to-face treatment?
A growing body of evidence suggests that for many musculoskeletal conditions, telehealth physiotherapy achieves comparable outcomes to in-person care. A 2021 systematic review found no significant difference in pain and function outcomes between telehealth and face-to-face physiotherapy for low back pain. Similar findings have been reported for neck pain, knee osteoarthritis, and shoulder conditions.
Hands-on treatments — manual therapy, joint mobilisation, soft tissue work, acupuncture, and shockwave therapy — cannot be delivered remotely. If these form a significant part of your treatment plan, a hybrid approach (combining video consultations with occasional in-person sessions) often works best.
No travel time, no waiting room, flexible scheduling, and the ability to access specialist physiotherapy regardless of location make online physiotherapy an excellent option for many patients — particularly for exercise-based rehabilitation and ongoing management of chronic conditions.
